A 35-game PlayStation 2 Hidden Gems List to Discover, Play and Love

Although the PlayStation 2 library had an age of greatness, many games came into the limelight. However, there were equally many games that did not and have stayed hidden.  Gamers who like to try everyday games that don’t have the hype of AAA releases will find these hidden classics enjoyable enough.

Beat ‘Em Ups, Shooters and Forgotten Fighters

The game known as Urban Chaos: Riot Response is a first-person shooter that allows the player to use a ballistic shield. Up to four player multiplayer is a rare enough feature in itself, but Urban Reign offers many more features. You get 3D brawling in addition to a Tekken inspired system with a robust parry system.

Twin Calibre, an exclusive title for Europe, places players in a twin-stick shooter with plenty of action and a cast both memorable and ridiculous. The Bouncer is an older PS2 beat ’em-up game known for its nice graphics and physics, characters, and ragdoll craziness.

Cinematic Action and Legacy Mechanics

The thrilling martial arts action of Jet Li: Rise to Honour’s fight scenes captured with motion-capture are complemented by analogue stick controls. While, Kill.Switch introduced the cover system which later became the basis for nearly all around the world shooters.

Funny Pranks, Mechs and Aliens antics inside PS2

Capcom’s Under the Skin is a weirdly entertaining game where players embody an alien being named Cosmi who can take the shape of any form to play pranks on humans. This stealthy caper draws from Home Alone’s potpourri of booby traps and even has a Resident Evil crossover, combining oddball charm with inventive cel-shaded visuals.

Ring of Red offers a world of dieselpunk alternate history in which post WWII Japan is divided. Combining tba tactics with real-time mech battles, it adds weather effects and a grid system to create an accessible yet ambitious strategy experience, with a beautiful atmosphere to boot.

Fighting Adventures: Ninjas, Gladiators and Mecha

Shinobido: Way of the Ninja is a stealth-action game where players take missions that allow them to ally with factions, created by the team behind Tenchu. On the other hand, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure applies Greek mythology to a fast-moving action-platformer and includes the trio of mechanics widely seen in God of War.

If you’re itching for some mecha action, how about commanding a giant robot via remote control in Robot Alchemic Drive? A clever gameplay design choice adds to the fun, because you can’t simply pilot your mech — it’s going to be Left (the mech) vs Right (your human self) as you dodge blows from the “enemy” while trying to get your robot to retaliate!

Outlandish Sports and Unique Experiences

A golf game with frogs on weird courses. That is the premise of the game Ribbit King. Though nowhere even near the level of polish that other titles had at the time, its wild creativity makes it stand out among PS2 experiments.

Epic Battles and Grand Adventure

Shadow of Rome taps into the gladiatorial film trend, offering bloody arena combat and a sprawling quest for revenge. Rogue Galaxy as well as Grandia III are two rollicking RPGs that allow players to explore vast, diverse worlds.

Unconventional RPGs and Fantasy Adventures

JRPG fans can find several overlooked gems. Although both Suikoden Tactics and Suikoden III stole some of the thunder from Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki (Tsumugareshi in-short), other titles such as Summoner 2 show how innovative twists can be fun. Players control a goddess, Maya, who can turn into a dragon, wolf, and other mythical beasts in the game Summoner 2.

Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is another unique RPG. It blends tactical battles with making moral choices. Players must choose between good or evil. There will be further consequences to these choices.

Racing and Sports with a Twist

BMX racing gets a shot in the arm with Downhill Domination, featuring mountain-action craziness, and fast bikes that can be upgraded. In Road Trip Adventure, players can immerse themselves in an open world featuring races, mini-games and collectables all from behind the wheel of cute, customisable cars.

Riffs and Ruckus: Guitar Fights and Street Rebellion

Gitaroo Man blends anime aesthetics with inventive rhythm gameplay and stages you in a series of unusual musical fights. Mark Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure contains platforming and beat ‘em up action, mixed with graffiti tagging, set in a dystopian city with a street culture style.

Anime Adaptations and Cult Curiosities

Steambot Chronicles Bumpy Trot is a Japanese console RPG that features a wide variety of customization options and game endings. Dice: DNA Integrated Cybernetic Enterprises may not be the most thrilling game in the world, but its dinosaur vehicles and kid-friendly gameplay offer plenty of Saturday morning cartoon energy.

Space stations tell us more than horror and sci-fi films

Run Like Hell is an action survival horror game set in a doomed space station with a cast of icons. Although the finished product is quite rough, the resulting hodgepodge of shooting, celebrity voiceovers and weird product placements give it a very interesting feel that captures the early 2000s.

In Evil Dead: Regeneration B-movie, Ash has to cut through hoards of Deadites along with a sidekick with a joke.  While it lacks polish at times, it nevertheless manages to land the slapstick spirit of the films. Because of this, it remains a cult omen favourite with fans of horror-comedy.

Forgotten Classics and Underrated Sequels

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a vertical Agile action game designed to let the player experience the world of Section 9. Gregory Horror Show is a 2004 video game based off a surreal Japanese animated series and is a stealth survival horror game featuring an unusual block aesthetic resembling Firewatch to create a timeless quality.

Both Head Hunter Attack Game and Getaway: Black Monday offered cinematic action and storytelling, but largely got lost in the shuffle. In Kessen III, players take their war to feudal Japan where they command troops and unleash terrible skills in the heat of battle.

Niche RPGs and Tactical Innovation

Teir Ring Saga: Berwick Saga is a tactical game that takes inspiration from games such as Shining Force. It uses a hexagon grid and characters control the mercenaries. The tactical combat of Ring of Red and Crimson Tears is enriched by the blending of genres incorporating roguelike elements and evolving settings.
