Exploring Game Modes

League of Legends has different game modes that give players a unique experience.

Summoner’s Rift

This is the most played mode featuring a classic 5v5 setup on three lanes namely Top, Mid and Bottom. The lanes are divided by the Jungle, an area full of neutral monsters. The players are divided into the blue side and purple side. Also, there is a river in the middle of the map that has important objectives like the Dragon and Baron. These monsters can turn the game around and are hotly contested in every match. Recently we updated Summoner’s Rift for visuals and performance, making it more accessible for players on lower-end PCs.

Twisted Treeline

If you want a smaller battlefield, Twisted Treeline is for you. It’s a 3v3 map with two lanes. This map features a potent neutral monster, Vilemaw, which grants a team-wide buff and several special altars that come with bonuses. Battles commence among the groups as altars open after 2 ½ minutes.

Dominion

Taking place on a round map and not on the ordinary lanes, it seeks to capture Dominions with your team. The techniques we use here are vastly different from those utilized on the Summoner’s Rift. The action is centered instead on quick movements and coordinated attacks between control points.

ARAM (All Random All Mid)

In this mode, players engage in battles on a single-lane map. This can be the Proving Grounds or Howling Abyss.

Since champions are chosen at random and locked in immediately, teams must adjust their game plans on the fly.

Special Event Modes

Riot Games sometimes adds a limited time mode to celebrate an occasion. For example, Ultra Rapid Fire or U.R.F. is a game mode which greatly reduces the cooldowns of abilities and removes resource limitations. This allows for fast-paced, chaotic matches.  Another event in the past called Hexakill featured larger team sizes and different rules than the traditional ones.  The special modes are popular for their creative and community-centric experiences, with more promised to come in the future.

Practising with Bot Matches

In League of Legends, players can choose to practice against bots. This is where new players should start. It mimics the standard match conditions but without the pressure of playing against humans. You can try different champions and strategies in bot matches while earning points to unlock other champions and content.

When new players log in for the first time, they will be prompted to start the tutorial. Take one step at a time as this guided introduction tackles the basics of movement, strategy, and combat on Summoner’s Rift.  After the tutorial, players should continue playing with bots on beginner difficulty until they become confident to tackle the intermediate AI.

When players feel comfortable and are familiar with one champion (preferably one won from gameplay), then try the intermediate bot matches. You can play bot games on Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline, and The Crystal Scar to hone your skills and learn the maps securely.

Transition to Player vs Player

Players can enter battles with other people when they are ready.  As one goes from practice to several pvp matches, new challenges arise and the unpredictability tests everything learned during practice. From tutorials and bot matches to competition, each step of the journey is designed to help every player learn the essential skills required for a rewarding experience in League of Legends.
