Microsoft may not have made its own VR headset yet, but it’s teamed up with Meta to release a special Xbox version of the Meta Quest 3S . This is the first ever limited edition of Meta’s VR headset built for Xbox fans.
The collaboration is part of a wider push by Microsoft for making Xbox Cloud Gaming more accessible to non-console users. You can now grab the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition for $399.99 AUD, as confirmed by Microsoft gaming executive Lori Wright.
What’s Inside the Bundle?
The bundle features a 128GB Meta Quest 3S headset that comes in Xbox Carbon Black and Velocity Green color scheme. The package includes color-coordinated Touch Plus sticks, a custom Xbox Wireless controller with that same design, and an Elite Strap for better comfort.
Moreover, purchasers will enjoy a complimentary three-month subscription to Meta Horizon+ and three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can access Xbox Cloud Gaming through the Quest’s Xbox application. This feature is now available.
Controller Support and Game Streaming
Players are not restricted to using just the included controller; any Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller can connect via Bluetooth.
Subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will also be allowed to stream not just the titles that are part of the service but over 100 other supported titles that they own through the “Stream Your Own Game” feature.
Extending the Xbox Ecosystem
Microsoft continues their theme of “This is an Xbox” for non-console product advertisements in this latest release. The Xbox games campaign reminds us we can enjoy them on our mobiles, tablets, and now, Meta’s VR headset.
The Xbox Edition of the Meta Quest 3S is being sold on Meta’s website, in Best Buy USA, Argos UK and EE UK. However, availability is limited. Microsoft has stated that they won’t be restocking stock of the device once sold out.
No Standalone Microsoft VR Just Yet
Although Sony and other firms have heavily entered the VR space, Microsoft has taken a cautious approach. In 2019, Phil Spencer stated the Xbox Series X/S was not going to focus on VR. There did not seem to be much demand for it. He remarked that people who want to play video games using virtual reality usually go to PC or other platforms that provide an offering in this area.
With this latest partnership, Microsoft still does not create its own VR device but continues to expand Xbox through partnerships.
