Survival Skills for Newcomers in Sons of the Forest.

Upon crash landing in Sons of the Forest, players find themselves in the middle of an island filled with blood-thirsty monsters looking for a missing billionaire. The condition of the environment is tough and dangerous as on land and sea lives either enemy or savage beasts.  To get around the wilderness, we need some practical knowledge and attitude. Whether you’re dying for breath or dying for fun, you can’t go wrong with these survival strategies!

Choosing a Strong Starting Location.

The starting point of a game can influence the difficulty level of the first few hours. In order to optimize your start, try to crash into the forest centre. This place is near important locations, caves that are underground and materials that you need for making and surviving.

If your first spot is not great, then starting over until you find a better spot is allowed.

What’s in Your Emergency Kit?

You now have access to a crafting mat, a backpack, and an emergency pack. These have the essential equipment and tools you need to begin.

  • GPS tracker (open with M)
  • Lighter (toggle with L)
  • Tactical axe
  • Survival guidebook with building instructions

The GPS tracker highlights nearby locations and events. The crafting mat is where you combine items and view gear. Press I to enter it and adjust your backpack for quick access. You can now bind tools and various weapons to hotkeys for quicker access during emergencies after a recent update.

Crafting Gear and Tools

New weapons including bows, spears, and clubs can be crafted at the crafting mat. You can see the items clearly. Once you gather the necessary items, a red icon will appear on the cogwheel. This means you can build a new recipe.

System will automatically disable incompatible recipes whenever you place components. To create in bulk, simply add more materials and click the cog many times.

Gathering Resources Effectively

As soon as they land, look for things in the bags next to them. Before dark, we’ll have enough early materials to make a simple shelter and protective gear.

As your base expands, make storage racks to hold your supplies like logs bones rocks. Using the available item in the spawn zone in the early game will help you craft and duplicate items faster.

Making Use of Your AI Partner

After the crash, we encounter native AI Kelvin, the first character one meets. Through a notebook interface, Kelvin can be told to collect certain resources, light fires or follow the player.

Before assigning him with tasks, make sure to set up storage areas at your base. Kelvin will automatically fill these items with materials requested. He is aware of the context of things. Thus, he can do the task that is related to the context like fishing if he is near water.

Keep an eye on his safety. If Kelvin is not armed and protected, then he can be killed by enemies.

Managing Your Survival Indicators

The interface of the game consists of mini-map and other statistics vital for survival.

  • Red bar (left): Health
  • Blue bar (right): Stamina
  • Red arm icon: Strength level
  • Moon icon: Fatigue or energy level
  • Left-side bar: Armour, when equipped

Staying warm and rested helps maintain energy levels. With increased activity comes a progressive increase in strength and consequently, maximum health capacity.

Navigating and Exploring the Island

The GPS device identifies major locations.

  • Green blinking icons: General points of interest
  • White icons: Cave entrances
  • Purple markers: Lost equipment and teammates

First, check the green and purple icons as caves have strong enemies. To survive, preparation and planning before entering these underground places is essential.

By pressing B, players open the building manual. Two crafting modes are available, switched by pressing X.

Step-by-step Crafting

The use of visual instructions to build things one component at a time. To make a fire select sticks and point them downward and place them.

Free-form building allows more creativity. Logs can be laid manually to shape walls and floors. Logs will get split automatically when used for various structures. To dismantle a structure, press C. This reclaims part of the materials.

The system resembles that found in The Forest and uses silhouettes overlaid with material types. Kelvin could be directed to retrieve all items required for these constructions.

Cooking and Health Recovery

Cooking is intuitive—press E at a fire to begin. Fully cooked meat turns dark and restores more energy. The remains of cannibals can be burned to make bones that are used to craft armor.  Use foods that can expire first, and keep emergency items, such as noodles, cereals and bars. Some food items also help you regain your health instead of medicines.

Facing Cannibal Threats

By the fourth day, mutant and cannibal foes start roaming the surface more. At first, they may just watch—and not attack—especially if no one hurts them.

During this initial grace period, a strong base should be established. Setting traps and defenses early minimize attack damage to buildings and castles.

Be sure that your storage racks are stocked with backup materials. Tools to repair the storage racks can also be helpful to have should an attack damage any of the storage racks. Use this survival guide to explore Sons of the Forest with confidence.  It is important to know how to use important resources, protect camp, and craft efficiently to gain an edge in difficulty.
