The Order: 1886 – The Cancelled Trilogy That Could Have Changed Gaming

Ru Weerasuriya, the creative director of The Order: 1886, a PlayStation 4 exclusive game, reveals that initial plans made the game the first of a trilogy.  The Order 1891 and The Order 1899 were two more games planned in the series which didn’t get approved in the end. Plans for a sequel had begun in its early stages, but the project was cancelled completely.

A Fresh Perspective on Victorian London

The Order: 1886 gave gamers a unique reimagination of history, leaning into a hidden, darker side of Victorian London.  The storyline of the game was about the secrets that changed history. Weerasuriya explained the sequel would have added more heavy combat situations and a completely new multiplayer part upgraded the game’s overall experience. Though the third chapter never went into production, the development team had planned arcs and possible expansions, continuing the story into the 20th century.

Ready at Dawn’s Evolution and Impact

Ready at Dawn, the studio that worked on The Order: 1886 has been around for around two decades now. Over the years, they have worked on many famous games like God of War, Daxter and more. After the unimpressive reception of The Order: 1886, the studio turned its sights toward virtual reality gaming, releasing Lone Echo for the Oculus Rift platform in 2017. Meta purchased the company in 2020, although the studio went completely dark in August 2024.

The Reason For The Series Being Canceled

The Sequels Of  The Original Game Got Cancelled Because Of  Its Critical Polarisation.  Many players and critics suggested that it was the game’s cinematic spectacle which overshadowed its interactivity; limiting its broader appeal. While The Order: 1886 is a nice game that looks good, the audience did not completely accept it. Thus, the franchise was closed.
